We picked up Play Nine — the card game of golf for family game nights, and it's become the one everybody actually agrees on. Here's why it works.
It scales beautifully. Play Nine works with anywhere from 2 to 8 players, and that flexibility is rarer than you'd think. It's just as fun as a head-to-head couples game as it is with the whole family crowded around the table. Most games are built for one or the other — this one genuinely does both.
Strategy meets chaos, in the best way. There's real strategy here — deciding what to flip, what to hold, when to take a risk — but it's the kind anybody can pick up fast. And then someone swaps the exact card you needed, and suddenly there's screaming. The gleeful kind. In our house, a round of Play Nine is equal parts outwitting your opponents and hollering when a plan comes together (or gets wrecked).
Everyone can actually play. It's rated ages 8 and up, and that's accurate — kids catch on quickly, adults stay engaged, and nobody's sitting out because the rules are too heavy. If you know golf scoring (low score wins), you already understand the goal. If you don't, you'll learn it in one hand.
Who should skip it: if your game group only wants deep, hours-long strategy epics, this isn't that — it's a fast, loud, fun card game. Which, for family night or date night, is exactly the point.
